Bethesda Ministries, through collaboration with the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners, has implemented the Children Are Safe and Supported program. The intent of the programs is to serve families with children ages birth to 8 years of age for safety and ages birth to 12 for trauma support. The programs provide education resources to families to prevent unintentional injuries and support for families going through some type of trauma with trauma-skilled training. The areas that Bethesda is working with are in East Tampa, Palm River, Progress Village, and Clair Mel. As a result of families participating in the safety initiative, each family will receive items to ensure safety in the home and will receive a home safety assessment plan. Based on the results of the home safety assessment, families can qualify to receive a fire extinguisher(s), first aid kits, bath thermometers, electric protectors, oven door locks, and children’s thermometers. Families experiencing trauma may be enrolled in a support group, one-on-one support exercises, receive coloring kits, books, and board games for the families. Those support needs that are beyond the scope of the program will be referred to other community agencies for possible assistance.
